In 2017’s debate, Candy Palmater responded passionately after listening to criticism from other panelists that men were portrayed negatively in her book, The Break by Katherena Vermette. The well-prepared panelists graciously fight hard for their chosen books, and often the conversation gets intense and emotional as the panelists are quite invested in their esteemed books. The week long debate is aired on CBC radio and TV in order to determine which title will be crowned the winner. Past debaters have included a mix of prominent figures including, Steven Page, front man of Barenaked Ladies, actor Alan Thicke, and even Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took a turn in the seat back in 2003. ![]() The debate is championed by celebrities and prominent Canadians. The weeklong event is dedicated to sharing, uplifting and highlighting Canadian literature. The annual national book battle began over 20 years ago, and each year a handful of top books are chosen to enter the ring. Ducks a graphic memoir about a young woman working in Alberta’s oil sands, written by Kate Beaton, was championed by Jeopardy super-star Mattea Roach. 2023’s Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) battle of the best books, “Canada Reads” has just wrapped up, and for the first time a graphic narrative has been crowned the winner. ![]()
